Check in at the halfway mark

Thirty minutes is long enough to lose track of time. The halfway mark is when you can still change course: when the pie is half gone, compare where you are with where you expected to be. Parents also use 30 minutes as a screen time limit a child can see.

A 30-minute writing assessment

  1. Minutes 0 to 5: plan the answer.
  2. Minutes 5 to 25: write.
  3. Minutes 25 to 30: reread and fix errors.
  4. Keep the pie on the board, so students can see when each part should end.

30 minute timer questions

How do I start a 30 minute timer?

Press Start. This page opens with the pie set to 30 minutes. When time is up, the timer plays three soft tones and counts the time over.

Can I show it to a class or change the length?

Yes. For a class, turn on Projector colors and press Full screen. To change the length, tap another length under the pie, or drag around the pie to set any time from 1 to 180 minutes.

How do I set a screen time limit a child can see?

Start a 30 minute timer when screen time begins and leave it where the child can see it. The shrinking pie shows how much time is left, so the end is less of a surprise.

What can you get done in 30 minutes?

A workout, a full kitchen clean-up, or a writing assessment. Pick one, start the pie, and check in when half of it is gone.
